Mammoth Sign 2022 NLL Entry Draft Selection Owen Down

DENVER – The Colorado Mammoth of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) today announced the organization has signed 2022 NLL Entry Draft selection Owen Down to a two-year contract agreement, set to begin during the 2023-24 NLL campaign.

“After returning to Robert Morris for another season, we feel Owen is even more prepared to play in the NLL,” Mammoth General Manager Brad Self said. “Owen is a mature kid. He’s long and athletic and plays a smart, but tough, game. He’s going to fit in nicely with our team this season and for years to come.”

Making a first-round selection for the first time since 2019, when the Mammoth selected defenseman Warren Jeffrey, Colorado drafted defenseman Owen Down (first round, 15th overall) from Robert Morris University and the Coburg Kodiaks of Major Series Lacrosse.

The Scarborough, Ontario most recently recording one point (1g, 0a), 28 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers in 13 games played as a graduate student. Collecting at least three ground balls in six different games while ranking second on the team with his 12 caused turnovers, the team captain concluded his collegiate career this past spring with four ground balls and one caused turnover throughout the ASUN Conference Tournament and is now set to being his NLL career with Colorado at training camp this fall.

“It’s been a surreal experience,” Down shared on draft night interview last fall. “Playing lacrosse for so long, it’s been a dream of mine to play in the league and for this day to come, to be selected 15th overall, it’s been an absolute honor and I couldn’t be happier to be here.”

Throughout his NCAA career, the 6-4, 195-lb. defenseman logged five seasons with RMU, having accumulated three points (2g, 1a), 101 ground balls and 55 caused turnovers in 62 career games, including just three games logged in his sophomore (2020) season.
