Canada Wins Fifth Straight Gold at the 2019 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship; USA Claims Fifth Consecutive Bronze

Team Canada won its fifth straight gold medal last night, Saturday, September 28, defeating the Iroquois Nationals 19-12 in the 2019 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship gold medal game.

Hours earlier, in the final to decide third place, the Team USA edged Team England in an 11-8 win to claim its fifth straight bronze medal.

The USA, after starting 3-1 against England in the first fifteen minutes, played a lights out second quarter, outscoring their opponents 7-0. In the latter half of the game, the USA couldn’t keep up with the impressive precedent they had set through the first two quarters, but neither could England. Though England beat the USA 7-1 in the second half, it was not enough to keep Team USA from its fifth bronze medal finish.

Mammoth defensemen Tim Edwards and Taylor Stuart both played for the USA on Saturday. Edwards scored one goal, assisted by John Ranagan, in the second quarter.

Play went back-and-forth and the score stayed tight through the first quarter of the contest between Canada and the Iroquois. Canada came up with a narrow 6-5 lead at the end of 15 minutes, then took off outscoring the Iroquois 13-7 through the final three quarters of the championship for a decisive gold medal win.

Ironically, in the first meeting between Canada and the Iroquois at the 2019 WILC – a pool play game on Monday, September 23 – Canada beat the Iroquois 19-12.

Mammoth defensemen Dan Coates and Robert Hope saw playing time during the final on Saturday. Hope picked up one assist on the first goal of the fourth quarter.
