Canada and USA Advance to Bracket Play in the 2019 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship

Canada is undefeated; the USA sits 2-2

Monday evening, September 23, the conclusion of pool play at the 2019 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship, Canada (4-0) routed the Iroquois Nationals (3-1) 19-12, and the USA (2-2) defeated England (0-3) 22-3.

The game of runs between undefeated Canada, first in 2019 WILC standings, and Iroquois, second in the standings, stayed tight through the first five minutes of the third quarter. At 10:10, Iroquois lead 8-7 after a marker notched by Jordan Durston, but seconds later a tally by Shayne Jackson started a five-goal run for Canada. With 1:12 left in the third quarter, Canada had claimed a 12-8 lead.

Through the first 5:13 in the final frame, Iroquois outscored Canada 4-1, coming within one score of the leading team, but Canada played lights out offense through the final 9:16 of the game, scoring six straight goals to close out their first real test of this championship in victory.

Dillon Ward and Mike Poulin split time between the pipes for Canada. Ward started the game in-net and made 20 saves on 27 shots.

Ward and Dan Coates were both credited an assist on the first goal of the game, scored by Dhane Smith.

Unlike the Iroquois for Canada, England did not prove to be a test for the United States. In fact, after falling 10-12 to the Iroquois Nationals on Saturday, September 21, England probably felt like a reprieve for the USA. England did get three shots past USA goalie David Mather in the first half of the game but didn’t find the back of the net at all in the second stanza.

Tim Edwards took one faceoff in the game, coming up with the ball for the win.

Following round robin play, which concluded on Monday evening, teams remaining in the championship move on to bracket play this afternoon, Tuesday, September 24.  Canada, Iroquois Nationals and USA – the top three teams in the championship standings, respectively – are all on a bye today.

USA will face the winner of Netherlands vs. Czech Republic tomorrow, Wednesday, September 25, at 9 p.m. MT. Iroquois Nationals will meet the winner of that game on Thursday, September 26, at 6 p.m. MT.

Israel, now fourth in the WILC standings, will face the winner of England vs. Finland tomorrow, Wednesday, September 25, at 6 p.m. MT. Canada will meet the winner of that game on Thursday, September 26, at 9 p.m. MT.
